automatic transfer switch

Automatic Transfer Switch, referred to as ATS, is a key power switching device used in uninterruptible power supply systems. Its main function is to automatically switch the load to the backup power supply when the main power supply fails to ensure continuous power supply for critical loads. Therefore, ATS is usually deployed in hospitals, data centers, financial centers and other places that have extremely high requirements for power supply stability.

The working principle of ATS equipment is to switch loads between two power sources to ensure the continuity and reliability of power supply. Once ATS switching fails, it may result in a power short circuit or critical load outage, both of which may bring serious consequences, including economic losses and social problems. Therefore, all countries attach great importance to the production and use of ATS and have formulated a series of standards and specifications.

ATS usually consists of two parts: the switch body and the controller. The switch body is divided into PC level and CB level.

PC-level ATS is mainly used to connect and carry loads, but is not suitable for breaking short-circuit currents. The CB-level ATS is equipped with an overcurrent tripper, which can connect and break short-circuit current. CB-level ATS usually needs to be used in conjunction with a circuit breaker (such as a miniature circuit breaker or a molded case circuit breaker) and achieves safe switching through a mechanical interlocking device.

The controller is the “brain” of the ATS and is responsible for monitoring the working status of the two power supplies. Once a power supply failure is detected, such as phase failure, undervoltage, voltage loss or frequency deviation, the controller will immediately issue a switching command, causing the switch body to automatically switch the load from the faulty power supply to the backup power supply. The controller is connected to the incoming line of the switch body to ensure timely transmission and execution of instructions.
